Shaxi is one of the better preserved ancient towns along the Ancient Tea and Horse Caravan Trail (running between Pu’Er, Yunnan, and areas in present day Bangladesh, via Myanmar/Burma) and is situated between Dali and Lijiang, Yunnan. There are countless ancient towns in this region, but this one stands out to be restored more consistently with historical design and artwork. Fortunately, I visited during off-season, so it wasn’t overflowing with tourists. In any case, I suggest visiting this gem of a town earlier than later.
